Another End of the World is Possible: Building Autonomy, Fighting for Our Lives
The situation: our world, the only home we will ever have, is being hurled into the abyss by imbeciles and nihilists. A 72-degree Christmas and a Trump presidency; lynching and deportation of our neighbors by police and ICE; pipelines desecrate the dead, while poisoning the living; billions of selfies, while 200 species go extinct every day; the feeling of powerlessness enforced by governments everywhere and the management of each detail down to the smallest part of our hearts: everything calls for this to end.
What’s necessary: that a new historical force rise up to face our situation; that we organize to make a better, livable existence on this earth, and put an end to the reign of those who would continue this catastrophic course.
Our ethos: a spirit that stands against the end of the world – revolutionary and driven by the desire to fight, carrying the recognition that power needs to be built and organized. Committed to strategy, not ideology, we have a faith in practice, of an openness to the world, of being moved by the event. We’ve abandoned the knee-jerk impulse of “critical” posturing that puts one on the sidelines of every situation. We believe in freedom and know we cannot have it if we simply react and define ourselves against the forces that seek to dominate us: we must make ourselves a power in our own right.
The strategy: build autonomy and revolution from the ground up by establishing the infrastructural and organizational basis for another way of life. We must immediately and patiently grow our capacity and power – starting from our reality, what we want, what we need, and where we want to go. Everything we do, each piece, each practice, must be part of a broader strategy of giving ourselves the means to be more powerful and to face up to the need for another way of life, reducing our dependencies and increasing our power over our own networks of food, health, transportation, shelter, or communications. As we see it, a historical force capable of confronting capitalism, government, and catastrophe has to be materially capable of living through their end, of breaking their blackmail of enforced dependence. That’s why instead of mourning this world, we’ve begun getting organized together, to help such a force come into existence, to be a part of it, to do what we think is called for in our single existence on earth. This is why we have created a space for meeting, organizing, and strategizing – the first of many.
A tentative vision: a powerful, autonomous territory takes shape between a multiplicity of spaces and infrastructures – hubs, farms, clinics, hack-labs, cafes, workshops, print labs, gyms, mesh networks, foundries, and forests – in neighborhoods and small towns from Chicago to Milwaukee to Detroit. Thousands of individual and organizational relationships are forged as fighters/builders/growers young and old find each other, experiencing a solidarity born of combining their capacities – skills, knowledges, resources, and passions along shared trajectories such that they will become capable of actually supporting an exit from our current, untenable way of life. In short, a territory full of all kinds of forms of life, rich in diversity yet united in the belief that this fight is the only dignified and just response to our time. And who over time have developed the means to take care of themselves and others in a growing and deepening way. As the Zapatistas say, we are “walking while questioning.”

La situación: Nuestro mundo, el único hogar del que disponemos, está siendo arrojado al abismo por imbéciles y nihilistas. Una navidad de 72 grados y la presidencia de Trump; linchamientos y deportaciones de nuestros vecinos por parte de la polida y el ICE, oleoductos profanando la muerte, mientras envenenan la vida; billones de selfies mientras 200 especies de animales se extinguen cada día; el sentimiento de impotencia generado por los gobiernos en todis partes y la administración de cada detalle de nuestros corazones: todo esto debe terminor.
Lo que es necesario: Que una nueva fuerza histórica surja panl enfrentme a nuestra situación actual; que nos organicemos para hacer de nuestra existencia en la tierra algo mejor y para dar fin al reino de aquellos que se proponen perpetuar este camino catastrófico.
Nuestro ethos: Un espíritu que se levanta contra el fin del mundo. Un espíritu revolucionario y guiado por el deseo de combatir, a la vez que reconoce que el poder debe construine y organizarse. Comprometidos con la estrategia y no con la ideología, tenemos fe en la práctica de una apertura ill mundo, en ser movidos por el acontecimiento y no por la mera critica que nos sitúa fuera de cada situación concreta. Creemos en la libertad y sabemos que no podremos alcanzarla si simplemente reaccionamos y nos definimos en contra de las fuerzas que buscan dominamos: debemos convertirnos en un poder en
nuestros propios términos.
La estrategia: construir autonomra y revolución desde abajo estableciendo las bases infraestructurales y organizacionales para una nueva forma de vida. Debemos inmediata y pacientemente hacer crecer nuestro poder – partiendo de nuest ra realidad, qué queremos, qué necesitamos y hacia dónde queremos ir. Todo lo que hagamos, cada elemento, cada práctica, debe ser parte de una estrategia más amplia que nos permita enfrentarnos a la exigencia de una nueva forma de forma vida: reduciendo nueslfas dependencias e incrementando nuestro poder basados en nuestras propias redes de comida, salud, transporte, protección y comunicación. Una fuerza histórica capaz de confrontar el capitalismo, el gobierno catástrofe debe ser materialmente capaz de ir más allá de éstos, de romper su chantaje de dependencia f0rzada. Esta es la razón por la que en lugar de hacerle duelo a nuestro mundo, hemos comenzado a organizarnos, para hacer de esta fuerza conjunta una realidad, para ser parte de ella y hacer lo que creemos es un llamado a nuestras existencias sobre esta tierra. Este es el motivo por el que hemos creado un espacio de encuentro, organización y estrategia en Chicago – el primero de muchos otros.
Una visión tentativa: un territorio empoderado y autónomo adquiere su forma entre la multiplicidad de espacios e infraestructuras – hubs, granjas, clínicas, hack-labs, cafés, talleres, laboratorios de impresión, “mesh networks,” recaudaciones de fondos y bosques – en barrios y pequeños pueblos, de Chicago a Milwaukee, de Milwaukee a Detroit. Miles de relaciones individuales y organizacionales se forjan en la medida en que luchadores, constructores y cultivadores, jóvenes y viejos, se encuentran unos con otros ponen en práctica una solidaridad nacida de la combinación de capacidades – habilidades, saberes, fuentes y pasiones – de la mano con trayectorias compartidas que nos permitirán encontrar una salida a la insostenible forma de vida actual. En resumen, un territorio lleno de todo lipo de formas de vida, rico en diversidad y a la vez unido por la idea de que esta lucha es la única manera digna y justa de responder a nuestro tiempo. Y quienes a lo largo del tiempo han desarrollado los medios pa ra cuid ar de sí mismos y de los demás de una manera creciente y profunda. Tal y como los Zapatistas suelen decir “caminamos mientras preguntamos.”
